#55: Josephine Baker
Entertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker adopted 12 children from around the world beginning in 1953. She called them her “Rainbow Tribe,” raising them at her French château to prove children of different races and religions could grow up together in harmony.

As adults, several of the children have shared memories of their unusual upbringing in interviews and books. Eight of the twelve have children of their own. Sons Akio and Brian have returned to the château where they grew up to share their mother’s story.
