#41: Penny Marshall, Calling the Shots
Laverne DeFazio had a big “L” on her sweaters and a best friend named Shirley. Penny Marshall played the tough, funny brewery worker on Laverne & Shirley (1976–1983), a spinoff of Happy Days. It became one of the most popular shows on TV.

Next, Penny got behind the camera. She directed Big (1988), which made her the first woman to direct a movie that earned over $100 million. Then she made A League of Their Own (1992), where “There’s no crying in baseball!” became a famous line. She made history as a director.
