#9: A Mummified Monk Sits Wearing Sunglasses
Inside Wat Khunaram on Koh Samui sits one of Thailand’s most unexpected religious sights. Luang Pho Daeng, a respected monk who died in 1973, remains seated cross-legged in a meditation position inside a glass case, his preserved body made even more striking by the sunglasses covering his eyes.

According to the account surrounding the temple, he wanted his body preserved if it did not decay, serving as a reminder of life’s impermanence. The sunglasses were later added because his eyes had dried over time, giving the display a calmer, more dignified appearance. Strange at first glance, the scene is treated with deep respect.
