#37: Dozens of Paddlers Squeeze Into Long Racing Boats
Thailand’s traditional long-boat races turn rivers into tightly synchronized contests of strength and timing. Long, narrow vessels carry crews of 30, 40, or even 55 paddlers, all driving their oars into the water together while racing another equally crowded boat toward the finish.

These races grew from riverside communities where waterways played an important role in everyday life. Today, competitions are held around Thailand, combining sport with local tradition and community pride. With so many paddlers packed into such slender boats, one mistimed stroke can make a very noticeable difference.
