As Happy Days soared in popularity, life off-camera could have easily spun out of control. Fame, long hours, and Hollywood temptations were everywhere. So Garry Marshall came up with a wholesome — and surprisingly clever — solution to keep his cast busy and connected.

He started a traveling baseball league made up of TV casts, who would tour and play against each other. It wasn’t just about fun and friendly competition. Marshall’s goal was simple: keep everyone out of trouble and away from drugs. Turns out, America’s pastime was also a pretty great life lesson.
