#11: Happy Days Wasn’t Inspired by American Graffiti After All
A common belief is that George Lucas’ American Graffiti sparked the idea for Happy Days. After all, both celebrate 1950s nostalgia, cruising cars, and teenage coming-of-age stories. It feels like a natural connection. But the timeline tells a very different story.

The original Happy Days pilot actually aired in 1969 as part of Love, American Style — years before Lucas even began production on his 1973 film. So while they share a similar vibe, Happy Days wasn’t riding American Graffiti’s coattails. If anything, it was already revving its own engine first.
