#4: They Had Revolutionary Managers
Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp weren’t your typical music managers. They wanted to be filmmakers, and The Who—young, loud, unpredictable—felt like a story worth filming. They didn’t just book shows or print posters; they also managed the logistics. They shaped the band’s image, encouraged Townshend’s ambitious and unconventional ideas, and documented everything.

Lambert especially believed in rock as something larger than sound—it could be theater, philosophy, rebellion. Their influence was messy, sometimes manipulative, but essential. Without them, The Who might’ve stayed just another London club band. Instead, they were pointed toward something bigger, more explosive.
