It all began with a connection at school. Pete Townshend and John Entwistle knew each other from Acton County Grammar, both of them drawn to music early. Entwistle was quiet, reserved, but brilliant on bass. Townshend had an edge, a mind that spun ideas faster than he could speak them.

When Roger Daltrey, already leading a band called The Detours, brought them in, the chemistry started to form. They didn’t have a plan, but they had something better: instinct. The early days were scrappy and uncertain, but they were building something, piece by piece, gig by gig.
