Ah, if only. There are a lot of misconceptions about Pompeii, but this definitely takes the cake (or is it bread?). The only edible substance that we know of that has been able to survive time untouched is pure honey, and that’s mostly because it’s pure sugar to the point even bacteria won’t touch it.

There are a lot of beliefs that the bodies found were preserved in the ash as well, but as it turns out, that is also not the case, and what we mostly have is the remains of the casing that covered the bodies. Pompeii really is such a fascinating story.
